My love for Americana and everything Patriotic sometimes takes over my creative mind. I can turn almost anything into a patriotic theme, and I usually love how they turn out. I am sure that my husband sometimes thinks that we have way too much patriotic items, but I just can’t help it, it is honestly one of my favorite things to paint!
We have a wide variety of mason jar plaques that you can adapt this too…you just need to measure your plaque and divide the stripes up accordingly (I chose to measure from the bottom of the “lid” would be. My stripes are 1 1/4″ wide on the Small Squatty Mason Jar Plaque (#63265), the blue field is approx. 2 3/4″ x 2 1/4″. I try and match the blue field up so that the bottom lines up with one of the stripes.
Tape off your stripes so that you can keep crisp lines. Make sure to let them dry well before you tape off for the next color…as you can see in the red stripes, some of the paint lifted when I removed it after painting the light stripes. I didn’t mind this look as it gave a more rustic look to the design. The red stripes are DecoArt Americana Country Red, the light stripes and star are Light Buttermilk, and the blue field is Uniform Blue. I chose not to do any shading and highlighting keeping this project perfect for painters and crafters of all levels.
The lid is DecoArt Americana Neutral Grey. For a little extra detail, I used the Black Identi Pen to add outlines to the stripes, star and along where the lid has indents. For the final detail, I used DecoArt Americana Snow White and added highlight strokes to the upper right and lower left corners of the jar and some wispy strokes to the lid area.
Finish with your favorite varnish and add wire or ribbon for hanging. You could even attach this to a festive wreath for your front door.
Remember with a little measuring, you too can turn any surface into a fun and festive flag for the Fourth of July!
Happy Painting and Crafting!
